What is a good drawing app for kids on iPad?
For children under about 10, look for a drawing app with large touch targets, a full-screen canvas, no layer system, and an undo button a child can find. Professional drawing apps are the wrong shape for this age — the tool palette is bigger than the drawing.
Why the iPad suits young children specifically
The canvas is big enough for a whole-arm movement, which is how children under six actually draw. Phone screens force a wrist-and-finger motion that most of them cannot control yet, and the results look worse for reasons that have nothing to do with ability.
It also survives mistakes. A child can undo, restart, or wipe a drawing without any of the emotional weight of a torn sheet of paper — which matters a lot for children who abandon drawings when they go wrong.
What to look for
A canvas that fills the screen, with tools on one edge rather than surrounding it. Fewer than about eight colours visible at once — a full colour picker is a toy in itself and children stop drawing to play with it.
No layers, no blending modes, no brush settings. Every one of these is a place a child can get lost with no way back to drawing.
A destructive action — clear the whole canvas — that takes two taps rather than one. Children find that button.
