How to draw a unicorn, step by step
Draw a unicorn in seven steps: a round face, a pointed horn on top, a wavy mane behind it, the eye and nose, the back and chest, four legs with a belly line, and a flowing tail. The horn and mane are what turn a horse into a unicorn, so draw those early.
Before you start
- The horn goes on the forehead, tilted slightly forward — not straight up from the top of the head.
- The mane is drawn as several separate wavy lines, not one blob. Each line is one stroke.
- Start with the face facing sideways. A front-facing unicorn is much harder and nobody draws it that way.

What usually goes wrong
- Drawing the horn too short. A stubby horn reads as an ear; make it about as long as the face is tall.
- Adding the legs before the body line. The back and chest come first, then the legs hang from them.
- Filling the mane with tiny scribbles instead of a few long waves.
What age is this for?
Ages 4-8. Seven steps is about the limit for a first sitting, so expect one break.
