How to draw a cat, step by step
Draw a cat in eight steps: a round head with two triangle ears on top, the eyes, a small triangle nose, a curved mouth, whiskers, the body, front legs, and a tail that curls around. Cats are easier than dogs because every part is a basic shape.
Before you start
- The ears are triangles cut into the head outline, not stuck on top of it.
- A cat face is wider than it is tall. A tall face reads as a fox.
- Whiskers go on last, three per side, straight and spread apart.

What usually goes wrong
- Making the ears too small. Cat ears are roughly a third of the head height.
- Drawing round pupils in round eyes — a simple dot or an oval reads better at this size.
- Straightening the tail. The curl is what makes the cat look alive.

Ages 4-9. Most children can do the head alone by five and the full body by six.
