How to draw a fish, step by step
Draw a fish in five steps: an oval for the body, a triangle tail on one end, a small fin on top, a round eye near the front, and a curved mouth. Everything is one continuous outline plus three marks, so a child can finish it in under two minutes.
Before you start
- Leave the tail end of the oval open — the tail attaches there rather than being stuck on afterwards.
- The eye goes high and forward, close to the mouth. A centred eye makes the fish look flat.
Step by step
- Draw a round oval body
- Draw a heart-shaped tail
- Draw the top and bottom fins
- Draw the face curve
- Draw the eye and a smiley mouth
What usually goes wrong
- Making the tail the same size as the body. Keep it small; a big tail turns the fish into a kite.
- Drawing scales. They take forever and children abandon the drawing halfway.
